Help For Your Depression - October 2006

An Introduction to Antidepressants

October 30th 2006 21:13
Depression occurs when the neurotransmitters in a person’s brain act improperly. These neurotransmitters are supposed to carry specific levels of nor adrenaline and serotonin. When these levels are too low a person may need to take SSRI drugs (commonly known as antidepressants). A doctor will be able to accurately determine how the drug is to be administered and at which dosage.

Each antidepressant is given for a different reason, requires a different dosage and works differently too. The type and severity of depression are the determining factors for which antidepressant medication is given when. These drugs are very strong and have definite side effects; some of these side effects are very unpleasant. For this reason doctors explore all other options before prescribing antidepressant drugs.

What is SAD?

October 30th 2006 17:03
Season changes are a normal part of the Earth’s lifecycle. With these changes come different experiences. Spring yields relief from wintertime. Summer brings lots of outdoor life, energy and fun. Fall yields a beautiful season. Winter yields many inconveniences such as snow, ice and cold. A lot of people also experience severe depression in the wintertime. This is called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and is often accompanied with weariness and irritability too. This is caused by a hormonal change that takes place when a person is deprived from light for a long period of time.

People develop SAD because of the lack of sunlight. Studies show that 20% of Americans suffer from some form of SAD. These studies show that 25,000,000 Americans suffer from mild to moderate SAD. Of course there are also more severe forms of SAD, which leads to symptoms so severe that people’s jobs are jeopardized and their lives are disrupted. Some of these people are also driven to suicide.

Treatment for Depression

October 28th 2006 01:34
Since depression is so common, there are a lot of ways in which it can be treated. There are both medications and natural remedies available to help a person who may be depressed. What treatment is used is based upon an individual basis and how severe a person’s depression is.

There are different types of medications available. These are used to fight the symptoms of depression. There are three categories of medications. These include:
1. Tricyclics (i.e. Norpramin)
2. SSRI (i.e. Prozac)
3. MAOI (i.e. Nardil)

Some people find that St. Johns’ Wort works well for them. This is a natural herb.

Another natural treatment is acupuncture. This also works well for some people.

One of the best ways to fight depression though is to change the way you feel about yourself. This may seem like it would not work but it really does. Looking at life in a positive way and mentally telling yourself to quit sulking and look at the good things in your life can be very helpful.

The first step to fighting depression is to recognize its symptoms. Depression is like many other illnesses in that it starts off small but if left untreated it can become very intense. This is why when depression first begins you should take action. Of course, other diseases, stress, use of drugs, improper diet, loss of a job or the death of a loved one can cause or aggravate depression’s symptoms. Regardless of what stage your depression may be at, you can still take steps to improve it. Whenever you recognize your depression, you should immediately start to take steps to battle and conquer it through relaxation, good friendships, positive thinking, good diet and physical exercise. You can beat depression!
