What Guru's Dont Know

May 30th 2008 02:00
It never ceases to amaze me to hear the things that I hear at some of those 12-step meetings. There is such a large population that will have you believe that all of your problems are because of the fact you are an alcoholic,or an addict or both. This school of thought runs rampant in those that have been around the rooms for a number of years. The GURU's as some like to call it.Just because they have stayed away from booze for a while, they are an authority on how to "work the program".This may sound a bit like bashing the 12 step program, however it isn't the program I am bashing,it is some peoples perception of the program. These oldtimers are very angry about the fact that they can no longer drink or drug. For whatever reason(usually in the materialistic realm, maybe the wife was getting alittle pissy about his drinking and threatened to leave and take the house) they have been able to stay away from it.One can easily see that It doesn't take much spiritual progress to stay away from something that can ruin your life.

gurus dont know

It is hard to watch those that are afflicted with depression and or mental illness talk about what they are going through, without these guru's tossing and turning in their seats. They need us to keep our comments on ALCOHOL!! God forbid you should mention anything about depression ,or the "D" word as I like to put it.
They don't want to hear about the phsycho-babble.They will tell you that the reason why your life is messed up is because you drank. The reason you are out of work is because you drank. The reason why your hair is brown is becuase you drank. And the reason why the whole world is the way it is..........is because SOMEWHERE,there is an acoholic!!

Listening to some of them talk of their past brings up alot of that psycho-babble,and it is staring them in the face,it isn't always about the booze or the drugs.
There are some good folks in that program that are sincere and empowering, and actually recovering. It is the ego driven angry clicky types that I need to stay away from.My recovery is more about going to meetings. It is an inside job. This is my life, and I dont need to explain to anyone who I am.Because if I think that I am fooling others,I am.But the most important person I am being dishonest with is myself.

The scarecrow and the day job

May 18th 2008 05:00
Some folks are creatures of habit. They like to get into a routine that becomes predictable. They like the security that routine provides, because we all need some kind of security in our lives. We also need something to look forward to.The day-in and day-out might give them a feeling of accomplishment, strength, and knowing what is coming the next day makes them even stronger and perhaps more confident as they trudge onward.

Every autumn,it is always fun to see the leaf men,or scarecrows that are newly created. They are given old clothes that perhaps people have grown tired of or are ripped and torn, but yet they are brand new leaf men,or dummies as we used to call them.
These little creations always look so good the first few days, then as Halloween slowly approaches, and the promise of winter looms closer, the wear and tear on our leaf men becomes increasingly evident.Maybe we might have to stuff them again, especially if it rains and the wind picks up.Around November, the leaf man is torn to shreds. Some times people leave them out until there is nothing left.
Nobody really cares to do anything with them. They just pick up whats left and throw it in the garbage. The daily grind can devastate those that find themselves in a job that they hate, and have to keep to stay alive.Or being in a situation or relationship that is toxic, but they stay and get torn up,thinking there is no other way but to stay where they are. That is what happens to some folks. The day-in and day-out just tears them up,wears them down.

A great line from an XTC song:

"Cuz we aint got no brains and we aint got no hearts it's just that wild old wind that tears us all apart. We're the Scarecrow people and we've got lots in common with you.And if you dont start living well you're all gonna wind up scarecrow people too".

Creativity has always seemed to be linked to mania and or depression.Over the years, there have been scores of people through out history that had depression and or addictive personalities. Some of the best writings and paintings were done from folks that were, well,a little out there. But they were only considered to be out there because they were being compared to those that are "normal".

The word Normal can only be understood in terms of comparing people. In one way or another,we are all a little whacked.Maybe the ones that KNOW they are whacked, are the normal people, while the rest think they have it all together. And let me tell ya,there are those that have it all going on.And if you dont believe them, just ask them.
A normal guy

There is no family that is with out some sort of dysfunction.Maybe there are some of us that think that our family put the "Funk" in dysfunctional. But that could be an entire article in of itself.
So instead of thinking what to write about,I'll think I'll just try and get some sleep and maybe
I will dream of the girl with the cotton candy hair.

My brain is out to kill me

Depression usually comes through like a storm cloud. It could be a clear, calm, and serene
day and then the next thing you know you are wondering why everything is getting dark, nothing seems to make sense, that heavy feeling takes over and it is time to find some shelter.Others around you seem to be basking in the warm sun as you are being overshadowed by the big black cloud hanging over you. They don't seem to understand, and try and get you to snap out of it,thinking that something must have triggered it.Sometimes that is true.We can be our own worst enemy. Our own thoughts can hold us hostage by taking over to the point where we sink deeper and deeper into despair.

This song by the Smashing Pumpkins really sums it up well.
Did you ever have that feeling of being on edge?An all around feeling of irritation? You wished there was something you could do to relieve the anger?Having the feeling that you wished that a stray dog would wander into your path so you could just rip it's head off.?

Sit down and shut up!

May 7th 2008 05:38
Hardly anyone likes to be alone with their thoughts.Thats why we always have the radio on in the car.Driving down the highway listening to a great song that comes on the radio,we get lost in the music and our thoughts. Our unconscious mind is really the one doing the driving because we are so lost in our thoughts.
We are suddenly where we were the first time we heard the song, maybe twenty years or more removed from driving 70MPH down the interstate. Then as we come to, we realize the song ended a long time ago and we are listening to commercials at a high volume. We turn it down and start to realize that we have driven way past our exit.
There are so many benefits from meditation and just about as many techniques. One technique that most folks might find helpful is very simple.Just sit down and shut up

Stinking thinking and fixation

May 6th 2008 10:54
Addiction and depression seem to follow a similar pattern.Addiction is sometimes referred to as a thinking disease. If anybody has ever spent any time in the rooms of AA or NA, they would hear the term "Stinking Thinking".Put in these terms,it is somewhat a negative affirmation towards oneself which doesn't leave much room for recovery.
As for the depression, the thinking is more on the lines of fixation, which was part of Freud's
theory of psychoanalysis where the unconscious seems to process the same thoughts over and over again. This can also be the root of anger, which can lead to resentment.Resentment can be described as getting angry over and over again at the same thing. That can also lead to rage and we all know where rage can lead to

Suck it up buttercup

One of the biggest misconceptions in understanding others is the thought that as humans, we are all alike in many ways. This thought can bring into play a wide range of feelings and judgement of other people based upon our own experiences and how we deal with them.
It's easy to watch another go through a situation that we have been through and judge, tell them how they will feel, should or shouldn't feel, what they are going through, and for cripes sake, if they are still suffering and struggling with those feelings, our response is that they should be over it already. Find some closure, man will ya? I'm tired if hearing about it.

This behavior seems to run rampant in those that miss the point in 12 step programs and it defeats the whole purpose of what the concept of the program was, or is based upon

Anger. It can really take over sometimes. And we have all heard the saying that depression is really anger turned inward. That may or may not be true in some cases. Depression can also be brought on by situations or environments. It may not be a mistake that a kid brought up in a dysfunctional household where substance abuse runs rampant, develops poor coping skills and turns to booze and or drugs to cope. Then, as he gets older and has a family of his own, he treats them the same way he was treated, whether he is in recovery or not........( just because one is in recovery doesn't mean they are recovering)
That could be the real meaning and definition of co-dependancy.

That's what leads to the anger

What do horses know about putting anything back together?
I have a friend that is going through a real hard time, I mean, he is really stuck to the point where he doesn't want to go out. So I call him on the phone and tell him horse jokes. I dont know why, but we both find horses funny. A whispering horse telling you to go and fetch him a nail gun and screw gun to fix that old gate in the back yard..........and while yer at it, bring him a blanket and a few carrots.hats what Robert Redford REALLY wanted to get acrossed in the movie the Horse Whisperer..................
