An Introduction to Antidepressants

Depression occurs when the neurotransmitters in a person’s brain act improperly. These neurotransmitters are supposed to carry specific levels of nor adrenaline and serotonin. When these levels are too low a person may need to take SSRI drugs (commonly known as antidepressants). A doctor will be able to accurately determine how the drug is to be administered and at which dosage.

Each antidepressant is given for a different reason, requires a different dosage and works differently too. The type and severity of depression are the determining factors for which antidepressant medication is given when. These drugs are very strong and have definite side effects; some of these side effects are very unpleasant. For this reason doctors explore all other options before prescribing antidepressant drugs.

It seems that Doctors are very quick to prescribe anti-depressants instead of looking for the root of the problem. I went to see a doctor a few years ago asking to be referred to a councellor to see was causing my depression and before I even opened my mouth he immediatley said I didnt need councelling I needed anti-depressants only. It is a huge blow to ones self confidence when you are written off like that especially if you are prone to depression. The pills that he prescribed for me sent me a little loopy and completely changed my personality - I found I was at times emotionally uncontrollable, was having black outs where I just couldnt remember what had happened, etc. A year later I went to councelling and found that much more therapeutic.
I guess anti-depressants are good but have to be the right ones - like you say - and they shouldnt be the first call without trying to identify the root problem.
