How to help a bipolar child

December 13th 2006 18:26
If you are parenting a child who has bipolar disorder, here are some things that you can do to keep your child well:
(1.) Make sure that you follow their medication schedule. Use timers, pillboxes, notes, or whatever it takes for you to remember.
(2.) Pay attention to the medication's side effects.
(3.) If your child needs help at school, then talk to their teacher.
(4.) Consider taking your child out of school until their symptoms stabalize.
(5.) Keep a daily routine so that you can reduce the stress within your household.
(6.) Consider family therapy because bipolar disorder can disrupt the whole family.

(7.) Take threats OF suicide seriously. While you may not want to think about it, yuou should go ahead and remove any weapons or dangerous medications from your house. If your child says they want to die then get them help right away.
