Stinking thinking and fixation
May 6th 2008 10:54
Addiction and depression seem to follow a similar pattern.Addiction is sometimes referred to as a thinking disease. If anybody has ever spent any time in the rooms of AA or NA, they would hear the term "Stinking Thinking".Put in these terms,it is somewhat a negative affirmation towards oneself which doesn't leave much room for recovery.
As for the depression, the thinking is more on the lines of fixation, which was part of Freud's
theory of psychoanalysis where the unconscious seems to process the same thoughts over and over again. This can also be the root of anger, which can lead to resentment.Resentment can be described as getting angry over and over again at the same thing. That can also lead to rage and we all know where rage can lead to.
All this leads to the idea of fixation.
The funny part about all this fixation is that it is a bit like B.O. (Body Odor) We are always the last to know that we have it, same thing with skewed thinking. If we are fortunate enough to have some good supportive folks around us,they can help by gently pointing out our irrational thinking and guide us back on track.Although there are scores of "well intentioned people" that aren't qualified to do this, although they will be the first to tell you they are. That's why it is important to pick your support system very carefully.Because it was once said that
left alone, we are only getting the same "idiots" opinion over and over again. My oh my, aint that just empowering eh? With the wrong supports, we could be getting a "different idiots" opinion over and over again.
The idea here is to get out of the fixation. One helpful way to do so is meditation,(which I will dedicate the next post to and I would love to hear your experiences and thoughts on this and all the posts for that matter)
